Culture Builders Keynote Speaker Spotlight: Valarie Kaur
Before Revolutionary Love was a framework, it was a question: What does it mean to see no stranger?
In the aftermath of September 11, Valarie Kaur began traveling across the country with a camera, documenting the experiences of Sikh, Muslim, and other communities facing violence, fear, and discrimination. That journey became Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath, a documentary about what happened when a nation in crisis began turning toward one another—and toward those it perceived as strangers. The practice of listening, witnessing, and telling these stories would become part of the foundation for Kaur’s life’s work.
Years later, she would write See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love and develop a framework for social change grounded in a different possibility: that love can be a practice. That we can learn to love ourselves, love others, and even love our opponents as we work toward a more just and connected world.
On September 24 Valarie Kaur is coming to UMBC.
