Role within the Division: Co-Director, Center for Social Justice Dialogue

How long have you been at UMBC? 10 years at UMBC, in DOIE 2 years

How would you describe your role within the Division of Institutional Equity?

I think my role (and really the role of the whole CSDJ team) is about equipping members of our campus community with the tools to engage deeply across differences of identity, perspective, and worldview. Fundamentally, that work is about engaging practices and approaches that remind us of our shared humanity and using that as a starting point for relationship building.

Can you share a moment or experience that shaped your passion for equity and inclusion work?

It would be hard to identify a singular moment. I grew up in a family and community of people who both cared about and labored toward equity and inclusion. For me, this work is an ancestral calling. I also exist at the intersections of different identities that are marginalized in our society -- doing this work is also about my own liberation.

What is one initiative or project you’re currently working on that excites you?

This is another hard question! I'm excited about all of the projects I get to work on. The projects occupying the most brain-space at the moment are Your Story Belongs Here, Bridge Builders, and FYS - Social Justice, Race and Dialogue.

Outside of work, what’s something that brings you joy or helps you recharge?

Salsa! I've been dancing for the last few years and it brings me SO much joy. Lately, I've been expanding my pasitos though with traditional Bachata – the traditional part is important at a time where sensual bachata is more commercially popular. Additionally, quiet time with my pup, Bellatrix, always grounds me.

Can you share a book/quote/movie or something others can engage with from your perspective of inclusive excellence?

See No Stranger, A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love by Valarie Kaur and All About Love by bell hooks -- love is the way!
